hi, I'm Jacob Ramirez

I'm a designer and educator in San Francisco. You'll find some of my work below.
If you're interested in working together, or just curious about a piece, email me at baysidedesignlab@gmail.com.

Program Design

I develop, build, and run creative learning spaces. I'm currently the Assistant Director of the Stanford Graduate School of Education's design & fabrication lab, and I have extensive experience creating & leading design programs inside of secure institutions (jails, prisons, juvenile halls) and other nontraditional learning environments. I also direct programming at Bayside, my own studio in San Francisco, where I teach hands-on workshops in bookbinding, sewing, and embroidery.

Embroidery

I've spent the past five years doing machine embroidery and textile design. Some of the work is commissioned through Bayside, which takes on everything from one-off pieces to larger production runs. I release some on my instagram and some is made as experiments or gifts. Every piece is made by me on industrial equipment, and I handle the whole process: artwork, digitizing, garment selection, thread colors, placement, sampling, and production.

Framed Artwork

Large framed embroidery, 11 by 17 inches

I create print and graphic work by combining mixed media, including tactile pieces that I stitch and scan, with imagery drawn from public domain archives and historical collections. I also work across a range of printmaking processes, using techniques like screen printing, risograph, linocut, and digital reproduction depending on the project.
